Can You Exchange Any Gas Bottle? What South Africans Need to Know

Published 16 May 2025

Many South Africans wonder whether they can exchange a gas bottle from a different brand or supplier. Here is the honest answer and what to check before you order.

The Short Answer

In most cases, yes — you can exchange any standard LP gas cylinder at a reputable gas supplier in South Africa, regardless of which brand or company originally filled it. The gas bottle exchange system in South Africa operates on a pooled basis: cylinders circulate through the market and are exchanged regardless of original brand. For a step-by-step look at how this works locally, read our guide on LP gas exchange in Pretoria.

However, there are important conditions that must be met for a cylinder to be accepted for exchange. Not all cylinders in every condition will qualify.

What Makes a Gas Bottle Eligible for Exchange?

For a gas bottle to be accepted for exchange at Alectra Gas, it must meet the following criteria:

1. Standard South African cylinder. The cylinder must be a standard LP gas cylinder designed for the South African market. Foreign cylinders (e.g. from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, or Europe) have different valve connections and thread standards and cannot be exchanged for standard South African cylinders.

2. Correct size match. You must exchange like-for-like: a 9kg cylinder for a full 9kg cylinder, a 19kg for a 19kg, and a 48kg for a 48kg. You cannot exchange a 9kg cylinder and receive a 19kg cylinder.

3. Structurally sound. The cylinder must be free of severe dents, cracks, bulges, or corrosion that could compromise its structural integrity. Minor surface rust is generally acceptable; deep corrosion or damage to the body or weld seams is not.

4. Functional valve. The valve must be operable — it must be capable of being fully closed. A seized, stripped, or broken valve makes the cylinder unsafe and unacceptable for exchange.

5. Legible markings. The tare weight and relevant safety markings (SABS/SANS stamps, cylinder test date) must be legible. Cylinders with filed-off or painted-over markings may be refused.

What Happens If Your Cylinder Is Refused?

If your cylinder is refused at exchange, you have a few options:

Get it inspected and recertified. LP gas cylinders in South Africa must be hydraulically tested every ten years (the test date is stamped on the collar). If your cylinder is overdue for testing or has minor damage, a registered cylinder test station can inspect and recertify it.

Purchase a new exchange. If your old cylinder is beyond recertification, you will need to purchase a new cylinder outright. Contact Alectra Gas to discuss new cylinder pricing.

Safe disposal. A condemned cylinder should never be used again. Consult your local gas supplier or LPGSA member for safe disposal guidance.

Can You Exchange a Different Brand's Cylinder?

Yes. In the South African market, LP gas cylinders are widely interchangeable between brands. You can bring a Totalgaz, Afrox, Handigas, Megagas, or any other branded cylinder to Alectra Gas for exchange, provided it meets the safety conditions described above. Browse our cylinder sizes and prices here.

The cylinder you receive back may not be the same brand or colour as the one you handed over — the pool system means whatever full cylinder is available at dispatch will be delivered to you. The gas quality and safety standards are the same regardless of brand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I exchange a 9kg cylinder and get a 19kg cylinder?

No. Gas bottle exchange is always like-for-like: the cylinder you hand over must be the same size as the one you receive. To upgrade cylinder size, you need to purchase the larger cylinder separately.

My cylinder is very old — can I still exchange it?

It depends on its condition and whether it has passed its hydraulic test date (stamped on the collar, valid for ten years). An old cylinder in good condition may still be acceptable. Contact us to describe your cylinder before ordering.

Can I exchange an empty cylinder that is not mine?

Legally, LP gas cylinders remain the property of the original filling company in some brands' terms. In practice, the exchange market in South Africa is open and cylinders are accepted from any source as long as they meet safety requirements. If in doubt, contact the brand owner to clarify their policy.

Does Alectra Gas accept cylinders from other suppliers?

Yes. We accept any standard South African LP gas cylinder in safe and serviceable condition for exchange, regardless of the original brand or supplier.
